MongoDB Atlas cluster

Create a MongoDB Atlas account and free cluster (UI or atlas setup), a database user and an IP access list entry, then copy the driver connection string.

Who owns what

An Atlas user belongs to organizations; projects inside an organization hold clusters, database users and the IP access list.

Steps

Steps marked “human step” are ones only you can do: verapli never signs in, submits, pays or accepts terms for you.

  1. Create or sign in to an Atlas account

The person registers at MongoDB Atlas (or signs in). verapli never creates the account.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit

    Where: https://www.mongodb.com/cloud/atlas/register

  2. Create a free cluster

Create a Free cluster in the Atlas UI, choosing cloud provider and region, or run atlas setup --clusterName <name> --provider AWS --region <region> --username <user> --password <password>. Only one Free cluster per project.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create or sign in to an Atlas account
  3. Create a database user

Create a database user and password for the app (atlas setup does this with --username and --password).

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create a free cluster
  4. Add an IP access list entry

Add the app's IP address or CIDR range to the project IP access list; Atlas refuses connections from anywhere else. Temporary entries can expire within 7 days.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create a free cluster
    If something goes wrong (1)
    • Connection suddenly times out from a home or office network.: The public IP has probably changed; check it still matches an access list entry. [3]
  5. Copy the connection string

On the Clusters page click Connect, Drivers, pick the driver and version, copy the connection string and replace <db_password> with the user's password. verapli stores it as MONGODB_URI.

    • verapli co-pilot
    • After: Create a database user, Add an IP access list entry

verapli captures MONGODB_URI here by plain code: encrypted in your browser, never shown to AI.

Terms and gotchas

Plain-English summary, not legal advice. Each card links its source.

Can cost moneyThe rules say

Free clusters pause automatically after 30 days with zero connections, and Atlas may deactivate idle Free clusters under its Terms of Service; export data you need. [2]

Worth knowingThe rules say

Free clusters are limited to 0.5 GB, 100 operations per second (excess is throttled) and 500 connections. [2]

What you end up with

Env varSecretFormatWhat it is
MONGODB_URIsecretDriver connection string including the database user's credentials. The Atlas docs do not fix an env var name; MONGODB_URI is chosen by verapli.

Pricing

  • Free tier: One Free cluster per project, 0.5 GB storage, 100 ops/s, 500 connections.
