Who owns what

A PlanetScale user creates or joins an organization; databases (with branches) belong to the organization, which is billed.

  • PlanetScale user personal owned by the person
  • Organization billing · under PlanetScale user

Have ready

  • A card for the organization. · The pricing page lists only paid cluster sizes (from $5/month); no free plan is listed. [3]Needed for: Create the database

Steps

Steps marked “human step” are ones only you can do: verapli never signs in, submits, pays or accepts terms for you.

  1. Create an account and organization

The person signs up at PlanetScale and is prompted to create an organization. verapli never creates the account.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit

    Where: https://app.planetscale.com/

  2. Create the database

Choose New database, pick Postgres (or Vitess), name it, choose the primary region close to the app, pick cluster size and CPU architecture, and create it.

    • verapli co-pilot
    • Human step: You add payment details
    • After: Create an account and organization

    Where: https://app.planetscale.com/new

  3. Create a role and copy the connection string

Open the database, click Connect, create the default role (or run pscale role reset-default <db> <branch>), and copy host, username and password, or a framework connection string. The password is shown once; verapli captures the connection string into DATABASE_URL.

    • verapli co-pilot
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create the database

verapli captures DATABASE_URL here by plain code: encrypted in your browser, never shown to AI.

    If something goes wrong (1)
    • Password lost after leaving the page.: Reset the role password and update DATABASE_URL; passwords cannot be shown again. [1]

    Where: https://app.planetscale.com/

  4. Create a service token (optional)optional

In organization Settings, Service tokens, New service token, name it, then grant only the database permissions needed. Copy the token ID and the token.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create an account and organization

No free plan is listed; the smallest Postgres cluster is $5/month single node or $15/month highly available, before storage, backup and egress extras. [3]

What you end up with

Env varSecretFormatWhat it is
DATABASE_URLsecretpostgresql://postgres.<branch-id>:<password>@<host>.horizon.psdb.cloud:5432/postgres?sslmode=verify-fullPostgres connection string including the role password. PlanetScale docs do not fix an env var name; DATABASE_URL is the common convention chosen by verapli.
PLANETSCALE_SERVICE_TOKEN_IDnot secretService token ID (first half of the API Authorization header). Name chosen by verapli.
PLANETSCALE_SERVICE_TOKENsecretService token secret (second half of the API Authorization header). Name chosen by verapli.

Pricing

  • Costs: Postgres PS-5 from $5/month (single node) or $15/month (HA); Vitess PS-10 from $39/month; extras for storage, backups, egress, replicas.
