Researched · not yet run liveLast researched 25 October 2026 · Runway · provider site

Researched, not yet run live. Built from the provider’s official pages (linked below). A person hasn’t walked this flow end to end yet, so check each step against the source.

Who owns what

A developer portal account owns one or more projects; each project holds its API keys, credit balance, billing settings and members.

  • Runway developer portal account developer owned by the person
  • Project project owned by the person or company · under Runway developer portal accountThe project creator is the owner with Admin access. Roles are Admin, Billing admin (credits, payment, members) and Developer (API keys only).

Keys belong to the project, not the user; removing a member does not revoke keys they created, so disable keys separately.

Enterprise workspaces can be linked to an API project; organizationId is needed when several organisations are linked.

Have ready

  • An email address to register on the Runway developer portal: The API developer portal (dev.runway.com) is separate from the Runway creative web app. [to verify]
  • A payment card for the initial credit purchase (minimum $10) · Generation calls consume prepaid credits. [1]Needed for: Add credits to the project

Steps

Steps marked “human step” are ones only you can do: verapli never signs in, submits, pays or accepts terms for you.

  1. Sign in or create a Runway developer portal account

Sign in at the developer portal. If you have no account you create it yourself; verapli does not create accounts.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You sign in

    Where: https://dev.runway.com/login

  2. Review the Terms of Use and Usage Policy

Read the Runway Terms of Use and Usage Policy. Output that breaches the Usage Policy is not licensed and accounts can be suspended.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You accept the terms
    • After: Sign in or create a Runway developer portal account

    Where: https://runway.com/safety/usage-policy

  3. Create a project

After sign-up you are prompted to create a project, which holds your API keys and configuration. You become its owner with Admin access.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Sign in or create a Runway developer portal account

    Where: https://dev.runway.com/

  4. Add credits to the project

In the project's billing tab, add credits (minimum $10, $0.01 per credit). Needs the Admin or Billing admin role. You enter payment details yourself on Runway's page. Optionally set up autobilling (recharge amount at least 1,000 credits).

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You add payment details
    • After: Create a project
    If something goes wrong (2)
    • Autobilling payment fails: Runway emails you and retries after 24 hours and again after another 24 hours; after three failures autobilling stops. Fix the payment method, then trigger autobilling manually to re-enable it. [2]
    • Autobilling fails near the monthly cap: The recharge is capped at the tier's remaining monthly spend and fails if that remainder is under $10; wait for the next month or request a higher tier via the usage page. [2]

  5. Create a project API key

In the project's API Keys tab, create a key with a descriptive name (Admin or Developer role). The key is shown only once; verapli writes it to your env file. If lost, disable it and create a new one.

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You press submit
    • After: Create a project

Terms and gotchas

Worth knowingThe rules say

Commercial use allowed subject to Terms and Usage Policy

Runway does not restrict commercial use of outputs and does not claim ownership of inputs or outputs, provided you comply with the Terms of Use and Usage Policy; output that breaches the policy is not licensed. [4]

Can cost moneyThe rules say

Your own users must be covered by equivalent terms

If your product lets users generate content, Runway's guidance says your terms should be no less protective than Runway's, and you need moderation, a record of who generated what, and a takedown process. Too many moderated requests can get the account suspended. [4]

Can cost moneyThe rules say

Usage Policy prohibitions

Bans include sexual content and adult nudity, child sexual content, graphic violence and extremism, hate and harassment, using someone's likeness or voice without permission, imitating the style of a living artist, and fraud or impersonation. Runway may suspend accounts for any violation; appeals go to suspension@runwayml.com. [5]

Worth knowingThe rules say

Spend tiers cap monthly usage

New projects start at Tier 1 (max $100 per month). Tiers unlock immediately after cumulative purchases of $50 (Tier 2, $500/mo), $100 (Tier 3, $2,000/mo), $1,000 (Tier 4, $20,000/mo) and $5,000 (Tier 5, $100,000/mo). Concurrency and daily generation limits apply per model per project; exceptions can be requested from the usage page. [2]

What you end up with

Env varSecretFormatWhat it is
RUNWAYML_API_SECRETsecretkey_…Runway project API key, sent as Authorization Bearer with the X-Runway-Version header; the official SDKs read this variable automatically

Pricing

  • Costs: Prepaid credits at $0.01 per credit; minimum initial purchase $10. Per-model prices (per second of video, per image, per 1,000 characters) are on the pricing page.
  • No free credits are mentioned in the setup docs. [to verify] Credit expiry and refund rules were not found in the API docs reviewed. [to verify] Sales tax may apply to autobilling charges.
