Twilio Verify (one-time codes)

Send and check one-time codes by SMS, voice, email, WhatsApp, TOTP and more through a Verify Service. For US user-verification texts, Twilio says Verify can be used instead of registering for A2P 10DLC.

Who owns what

A Verify Service lives inside a Twilio account; one Service holds the shared settings (name, code length, channels, Fraud Guard) for all verifications.

  • Twilio account (AC…) organisation
  • Verify Service (VA…) project · under Twilio account (AC…)The friendly name appears in the code message, so use your app or brand name.

Have ready

  • The app or brand name users should see in the code message · The Service friendly name is used in verification messages. [to verify exact wording] Needed for: Create a Verify Service
  • List of countries your users are actually in · Twilio recommends switching off destinations outside your business focus to limit SMS pumping fraud. [2]Needed for: Set Fraud Guard and Geo Permissions

Steps

Steps marked “human step” are ones only you can do: verapli never signs in, submits, pays or accepts terms for you.

  1. Have a Twilio account and API key

Complete twilio/account-and-keys first (sign-up, upgrade, API key).

    • Guided by hand
    • Human step: You sign in
  2. Create a Verify Service

In Console open Verify > Services and create one, or call POST /v2/Services with a FriendlyName. Note the Service SID (VA…).

    • Official API
    • After: Have a Twilio account and API key
    The provider says
Immediate; the Service is usable as soon as it is created. [1]

  3. Set Fraud Guard and Geo Permissions

Keep Fraud Guard on (Standard is the default level) and switch off countries you do not serve under Verify Geo Permissions.

    • Guided by hand
    • After: Create a Verify Service
    If something goes wrong (1)
    • Real users in a country stop receiving codes (60410): Fraud Guard blocked the SMS. Check SMS Fraud Insights, consider adding the number to the Safe List or adjusting the protection level for that country. [2]
  4. Send and check a test code

Start a verification to your own verified number and check the code, to confirm the Service works end to end.

    • Official API
    • After: Create a Verify Service
    If something goes wrong (1)
    • Code does not arrive on trial: Trial accounts reach only verified recipients in the sign-up country; verify the number or upgrade. [5]

Terms and gotchas

Can cost moneyThe rules say

Every successful verification costs $0.05 plus a per-channel fee (for example US SMS), so SMS pumping fraud can run up real costs; keep Fraud Guard and Geo Permissions tight. [3]

Worth knowingThe rules say

Higher Fraud Guard levels block more and have a slightly higher false-positive rate (under 1% at Standard, under 2% at Max). [2]

Worth knowingThe rules say

For US numbers, if you only send user verification texts, Twilio says you can use Verify rather than registering for A2P 10DLC. [4]
